The Health & Safety Level 1 course provides participants with a practical introduction to New Zealand’s workplace health and safety expectations under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 (HSWA). It is a three part course (C1,C2,C3) designed for workers, supervisors, and small business operators who need a clear understanding of their roles and responsibilities in maintaining a safe workplace.

Participants will learn the fundamentals of proactive risk management, including how to identify hazards, assess risks, and apply basic controls to prevent harm before incidents occur. The course explains the concept of shared responsibility, covering the duties of PCBUs, officers, workers, and other parties in the workplace. It also highlights the importance of worker engagement, consultation, and reporting.

This is an educational awareness course focused on building confidence and foundational knowledge. While no NZQA qualification is issued, participants receive a Training Team Certificate of Competence upon completion.

Although health and safety training refreshers are not formally mandated under the HSWA, WorkSafe recommends ongoing education, and refresher training every two years is considered best practice. Maintaining up‑to‑date knowledge can assist organisations and individuals in demonstrating due diligence and reasonable practicability, particularly in the event of an incident or court proceedings.
