This single half-day course is tailored towards low-risk workplaces or individuals who need to gain basic first aid skills, learning minor injury management and the ability to recognise and treat life-threatening emergencies until help arrives. Note: with first aid courses there is a mandatory pre learning component that is sent to participants, completing this pre learning in your own time and bringing a valid form of photographic identification are the only prerequisites towards attending and attaining the certifications within this course.

  • Participants gain level 1 First Aid Certificate valid for 2 years, extendable a further 2 years via attending refresher course or repeating this course
  • Optional addition of NZQA credits for Unit Standard 6401 and 6402
  • Available for Onsite and In Class
  • 4 Hour face to face, Duration 4 hour prelearning

By the end of the course attendees will be equipped to:

  • Assess and manage trauma conditions, including wounds, soft tissue injuries, burns, fractures, dislocations, and poisoning (NZQA Unit Standard 6401).
  • Assess and manage medical conditions including asthma, anaphylaxis, heart attacks, angina, strokes, seizures and diabetes (NZQA Unit Standard 6401).
  • Recognise and provide basic life support, including airway management, CPR (infants, children and infants), defibrillator (AED) use, shock, choking and bleeding control (NZQA Unit Standard 6402).
  • Assess the scene and manage hazards that may be present when providing basic life support (NZQA Unit Standard 6402).

NZQA-certified instructors are available to aid in queries participants may have related to the course, guiding participants in practising first aid management skills. This course can also be adapted to onsite specific scenarios tailored to your workplace. Do note that, as with all NZQA standards, credits earned from this course do not expire, however WorkSafe recommends respective certifications require renewal to remain relevant, this can be adhered to via attending the refresher course within 2 years of completing a first aid level 1 course or alternatively repeating this course should the expiration date be exceeded.

To gain the certifications/credits offered, there is an assessment completed during the training session assessing participant knowledge against NZQA unit standards 6401 and 6402. Assessors must confirm the participants’ ability to demonstrate the correct incident response from a first aid context. The assessment is accounted for within the 4-hour session.
